Maggie's Southampton has been supporting people with cancer since 2021.
RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete has designed Maggie’s Southampton, on the site of Southampton General Hospital.
It has a kitchen table at its heart, offers glimpses and views of nature and provides thoughtful spaces to find privacy, as well as places to come together as a group by moveable walls making for a flexible and uplifting space.
The centre has a library area where visitors can access information relevant to their situation.
The garden has been designed by Chelsea Gold Medal winner Sarah Price and will offer a secluded oasis shielded from the suburban campus.
Almost three quarters of the site is given over to four distinct gardens that are inspired by the ecology of the nearby New Forest.
The ambition is to create a natural haven that provides seclusion and protection from the outside world.
AL_A is the award-winning architecture practice founded by the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete with Directors Ho-Yin Ng, Alice Dietsch and Maximiliano Arrocet.
Since its formation in 2009, AL_A has refined an intuitive and strategic approach to design.
Collaborating with ambitious and visionary clients, we develop designs that are conceptualised as urban projects not just buildings and projects that express the identity of an institution, a city or a nation.
Everything you need to know about how all our centres are created – the philosophy behind their unique design, the importance of architecture and gardens and how we choose the people we work with.
