Architecture and design – West London

Maggie's West London was built in 2008.

This bright orange building protectively shields its visitors from the bustling city streets and hospital that surround it, offering a calm oasis in the centre of West London to offer our support.

The building

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Maggie’s West London was inspired by Richard Rogers' concept of a heart nestled in the protective wrap of a building’s four walls. 

Rogers said: 

"The idea was to try to minimise the overbearing impact of Charing Cross Hospital. 

The roof, the landscaping, the hearth inside, the views out, each was to take you away from the hospital and the bustle of the road."

The bright orange walls carry visitors into an equally uplifting interior with cosy rooms, bright open spaces and transitional walls that provide the flexible space needed to host everything from intimate chats to lively exercise classes.

The garden

The centre is situated within a series of courtyards and a garden that gently guides people into the centre from the hospital. 

The designer, Dan Pearson, said: I’m delighted that my design is helping people on their journey with cancer.

The architect — Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners

RSHP is an international practice based in Hammersmith, just a short walk from Maggie’s London. 

The practice was founded by Lord Richard Rogers, Graham Stirk and Ivan Harbour in 2007.
