Maggie's Chief Exec Dame Laura Lee honoured by National Lottery art installation in London

Tuesday 17 September 2024

The art installation features seven ‘Game Changers’, recognised by the National Lottery for the game-changing impact of their community contributions.

Portraits of the Community Game Changers painted on Perspex screens by renowned graffiti artist Luis Gomez De Teran have been installed in St James’s Park Lake.

They appear to float on the surface of the water, with the reflection thought to symbolise the positive ripple effect of the Game Changers' contributions to their respective communities.

The installation was unveiled by broadcaster and TV personality Adele Roberts, who has talked publicly about her bowel cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy treatment and life with a stoma.

Ahead of the unveiling, Adele and Dame Laura met in Maggie’s, West London – one of 24 Maggie’s cancer support centres across the UK – to discuss the important role the centres play in people’s cancer experiences.

Adele commented: “As someone who has personally experienced the challenges of cancer and witnessed the incredible work of charities like Maggie’s, I am deeply honoured to support The National Lottery’s celebration of these extraordinary Community Game Changers.

“It has been moving to spend time with Laura Lee and to witness the care and dedication that goes into her work.

“Laura and the other Game Changers are truly inspiring, and it’s a privilege to be part of an initiative that shines a light on the positive change they bring to so many lives.”

After being declared cancer-free, Adele set a Guinness World Record in 2023 as the fastest female to run a marathon with an ileostomy bag.

30 years of funding community projects

The National Lottery has chosen to honour 30 inspirational people with the title of Game Changers in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the first National Lottery draw.

These Game Changers have all achieved remarkable things in their fields, with the help of some funding from The National Lottery.

Maggie's has received over £4 million in funding from the National Lottery, to help run its 24 centres across the UK and build new ones to provide expert cancer support to people facing a cancer diagnosis.
