HRH The Duchess of Cornwall opens Maggie’s Manchester

We are delighted that our President, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has officially opened our new Maggie’s cancer support centre in the grounds of The Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Tuesday 26 April 2016 marks the official opening of Maggie’s Manchester and the centre will open its doors to the public in May.

The new centre, known as Maggie’s Manchester at The Robert Parfett Building, has been designed by acclaimed architects Foster + Partners, with complementary landscape design by Dan Pearson.

The centre was developed by Maggie’s to enhance the care and support already on offer at The Christie, Europe’s largest single site cancer centre. Every year 50,000 people in the North West are diagnosed with cancer. As the number of people living with cancer increases, support becomes even more important.

Maggie’s Manchester is our 19th completed centre across the UK and internationally. When open to the public, the centre will provide a full programme of support, including psychological support, benefits advice, nutrition workshops, relaxation and stress management, art therapy, tai chi and yoga.

Laura Lee, Maggie’s Chief Executive said:

“It was an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, Lord Foster and all of our guests to the opening of Maggie’s Manchester at The Robert Parfett Building.

It is wonderful that we will now be able to offer the people of Greater Manchester Maggie’s practical, emotional and social support. The team at the centre are now looking forward to welcoming visitors. Anyone with cancer, their family or friends are welcome to visit and talk to our professional staff, make the most of our programme of support, or simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.”

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall became President of Maggie’s in November 2008 following her visit to Maggie’s Edinburgh in July 2008.

Her Royal Highness is passionate about Maggie’s work and has shown her commitment to the charity by visiting many of the Maggie’s centres across England, Wales and Scotland, and hosting several events in support of Maggie’s.

As Maggie’s President, Her Royal Highness has made a huge difference to Maggie’s and has brought great joy to many of the people who use the centres across the Country.
