Employees at global insurance firm, Howden, voted for Maggie’s to be their Groupwide UK charity partner for the next two years.

The partnership will aim to raise a staggering £500,000 to help Maggie’s support as many people living with cancer as possible.

Employees at Howden will raise funds for Maggie's by taking part in activities including quizzes, static triathlons and their flagship Goodwood 24-hour cycle in July.

Unprecedented demand for cancer support

The support Maggie’s provides has never been more needed. People living with cancer have experienced an incredibly difficult few years, with the pandemic, cost-of-living crisis and pressure on the NHS making living with cancer harder than ever before.

The funding brought by the partnership will help to deliver vital cancer support across our 24 UK centres, including 6,500 financial support sessions and 4,000 psychological support sessions, to alleviate the extreme stress and anxiety that a cancer diagnosis can bring.

Maggie’s and Howden will also be working strategically to develop cancer friendly insurance and challenge the entire insurance industry to provide the best possible service to people living with cancer who are looking to secure insurance.

Challenging the insurance industry, together

Dame Laura Lee, Chief Executive at Maggie’s, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been chosen by Howden to be their new UK charity partner.

“People with cancer have never faced tougher challenges – a record number of people are waiting longer than ever for cancer treatment, and for many, the cost-of-living crisis is even overshadowing the difficulties of living with cancer. This is why the demand for our support is growing every day.

“Our partnership with Howden will help Maggie’s offer practical and emotional support to thousands of people with cancer and their families across the UK. We’re also looking forward to working together to challenge the insurance industry to provide the best possible service to people living with cancer.”

Howden employees share cancer experiences

Dominic Collins, Executive Chairman at Howden, said: “I’m so pleased our colleagues have chosen Maggie’s as our UK charity partner.

"My wife Caroline died at 50 years old from cancer, having been diagnosed 10 years earlier when our children were aged 9, 7 and 4.

"We came to understand that the social and emotional support that Maggie’s offers to those with cancer and, as importantly, to their families, really does make a difference. I look forward to seeing what we are able to achieve together to help further Maggie’s incredibly important work.”

Rochelle De-Sa, Insurance Consultant at Howden, said: “I nominated Maggie's to be our UK charity partner because of my sister Josie's experience.

“Diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at 30, she found an escape at Maggie’s during a time of great fear and uncertainty. Their support extended beyond Josie, offering comfort to our entire family during this difficult time.

“Josie is now cancer free, and I'm forever grateful to Maggie’s and the amazing staff that helped her and our family.

“Cancer knows no boundaries, affecting us all, and supporting Maggie’s means supporting those facing this challenge.”
