We were delighted to welcome our President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, to Maggie's Barts on Wednesday 7 October.
During her visit, The Duchess of Cornwall met and spoke with people living with cancer who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
One in three people living with cancer say they have been affected by delays to treatment, diagnosis and missed appointments due to the pandemic.
This on top of the anxiety and uncertainty that living with cancer already brings means that people need the free psychological, practical and emotional support that we offer now more than ever.
During lockdown we've supported people with cancer by phone, email and online. Our centres are now open to see people by appointment and limited drop ins, for those who are visiting hospitals. This support will run alongside ongoing phone, email and digital support.
It was fantastic to be able to welcome our President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to Maggie’s Barts. It is so important that we hear about the experiences of people living with cancer through this pandemic and the visit has helped those voices be heard.
We hear from people in every one of our centres across the UK who have experienced undeniable trauma, stress and fear because of the impact lockdown and coronavirus has had on their treatment, quality of life and emotional and psychological wellbeing.
Dame Laura Lee, Chief Executive of Maggie’s
Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall sent this message to Maggie’s earlier this year:
At this difficult time, I wanted to send a brief message to the whole Maggie’s family, to say that I am thinking of you all. It is hard to imagine how the difficulties of living with cancer are compounded by the current situation, but I am sure that you are all rising to the challenge with your usual grace, determination and good humour. I am already looking forward to my next visit to one of your wonderful centres – but, in the meantime, please take good care of yourselves and know that your President is immensely proud of everything that Maggie’s stands for.
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall became President of Maggie’s in November 2008 following her visit to Maggie’s Edinburgh in July 2008.
Her Royal Highness is passionate about our work and has shown her commitment by visiting many of our centres across England, Wales and Scotland, and hosting several events in support of Maggie’s. As President, Her Royal Highness has made a huge difference to Maggie’s and has brought great joy to many of the people who use the centres across the UK.
