The new Maggie’s centre, which will provide expert support for people with cancer as well as family and friends, will be built in the grounds of University Hospital Coventry.
Maggie’s Chief Executive Dame Laura Lee said:
We are delighted to have planning permission to build our new Maggie’s in Coventry.
We have been working with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust for many years to bring our expert support to the people of the West Midlands, so it is wonderful we are now a step closer.
Professor Andy Hardy, Chief Executive of UHCW NHS Trust, said:
I’m delighted to hear that we are a major step closer to having a beautiful new Maggie’s centre on site here at University Hospital Coventry.
The centre will make a real difference to patients who come here from across the area for treatment, as well as their family and friends.
The patients we care for are often tired, stressed, and emotionally and physically drained by their illness, so I’m sure they will very much welcome having this fantastic facility and additional support from Maggie’s specialist staff, which is designed to complement the work we do here.
The new centre will be designed by Jamie Fobert Architects, with a focus on well-being and sustainability, including the use of natural light and natural materials.
It will support the 135,000 people living with cancer in the area. It is hoped the centre will be open by 2027.
We are actively fundraising to deliver the centre in Coventry.
Since we opened our first centre in 1996, we have developed a programme of support that is proven to help people with cancer, as well as family and friends, take back control.
Our expert staff include psychologists, cancer support specialists and benefits advisors and the majority of funding comes from voluntary donations.
The cancer support we offer is free, and no appointment or referral is needed – just come in.
